About Us


 

 

The GROW (QLD) office is located at 1014 Logan Road, Holland Park. We are just next to the Holland Park Uniting Church. There is a bus stop right outside our door and an express stop just up the road.  (contact Translink on 131230 for bus times).

Our doors are open 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday

Every Thursday at the GROW Centre we have Program Study Group commencing at 10.30am followed by a Friendship day at 11.30am. All welcome to attend, bring along your lunch.

The Northside has it own Friendship and Study group, which meets monthly on the First Tuesday - Healing Room, 193 Beams Road, Taigum.

Social Activities & Program Workshops are held regularly at the Centre. Please call Freecall

Upcoming Events - For more information on any of these events, please call the GROW Centre on 3394 4344 or Freecall 1800 558 268. Alternatively call and join our mailing list.

Chatters Lunch: Every second Thursday of the month at Chatters the Cafeteria at the Uniting Church, on the corner of Rode & Gympie Rds Chermside - the Stafford and Bridgeman Downs groups meet at 12.30pm. All welcome and prices are reasonable.

Program Study/Friendship Day - Every Thursday at the GROW Centre, we have Program Study Group commencing at 10.30am followed by Friendship Day at 11.30am.  We encourage everyone to come along, bring your lunch and make a day of it. It is lots of fun and a great chance to learn and discuss the GROW program and also a chance to get to know others in the GROW Community.

Northside Friendship Day -  The Northside has its own Friendship and Study Day, which meets monthly on the first Tuesday in the Healing Room, 193 Beams Road, Taigum. Day starts at 10am for Morning Tea and 10.30am for the study hour. Please bring your own lunch and follow with Friendship Day.

2011 QLD Member Survey

Questionnaires were distributed in June 2011 to members who regularly attend GROW meetings, with an invitation to complete.

111 questionnaires were completed and returned.

What follows is a summary of the information received.

Demographic Information

  • A majority of respondents (55%) were female,
  • 18% were in the 36 to 45 age bracket,
  • 24% of respondents were in the 46 to 55 year age bracket,
  • 28% of respondents were in the 56 to 65 year age bracket,
  • though the full range was from 23 to 81 years.
  • 72% of respondents were born in Australia.
  • They had been members of GROW for periods ranging from 1 week to 40 years,
  • the average length of membership being 4.7 years.

Employment

  • 59% of respondents receive Centrelink benefit or pension.
  • 29% of respondents are in paid employment.
  • 45% of respondents are involved in volunteer work.
  • 36% of employed Growers say that GROW has helped them to retain or regain their employment.

Diagnosis

  • 79% of respondents had received a diagnosis of mental illness.

Of those with a diagnosis:

  • 81% were diagnosed with depression,
  • 67% were diagnosed with anxiety,
  • 23% were diagnosed with bi-polar affective disorder,
  • 27% were diagnosed with panic attacks,
  • 2% were diagnosed with post natal depression,
  • 18% were diagnosed with schizophrenia,
  • 17% were diagnosed with other disorders.



Use of Professional Services

Professional help (medical, para-medical or counselling)

  • 95% of respondents had received professional help at some time,
  • 18% no longer receive professional help,
  • 50% report that GROW helped them reduce or end their need of help.

Psychiatric Medication

  • 88% of respondents have taken psychiatric medication at some time,
  • 54% report GROW helped them to continue taking prescribed medication,
  • 39% have had their dosage reduced and
  • 17% have had their dosage ceased by their doctors.

Hospital Treatment

  • 54% of respondents have been hospitilised for mental illness with the average stay of 9 weeks, with an average of 3 admissions,
  • 30% report GROW has helped them to no longer need hospital support, and
  • 60% have significantly less need of hospital support.



Improved Lifestyle

Respondents indicated improvements in their lifestyles in the following areas:

SUMMARY OF RESULTS

Lifestyle

  • 92% of respondents report improvement in two or more of the lifestyle categories listed above.
  • The average number of categories was 6.4.

 

Use of Mental Health Services

  • 87% had accessed a mental health professional at some time, and 65% had been hospitilised.
  • 62% report that their use of mental health services has decreased as a result of their membership in GROW,
  • 30% report no longer requiring hospital support and 67% as needing significantly less hospital support as a result of GROW.
